Maze War
Maze War was released in 1974 on the ARPANET network. It is truly the first networked 3-Dimensional multiplayer first person shooter game. The players are eyeballs battling in an actual maze. The eyeballs shoot at each other and the enemy robots to kill them. The eyeballs can actually shoot behind them and camp in corners and wait until an enemy walks by so they can ambush them. As you will see in the video, the screen was half first person and half map of the maze. The maze part of the screen influenced the radar screens in the bottom corner of modern online games so the enemy can be seen from anywhere on the map. The idea of the game is to go around and kill the other eyeballs and scores are tallied so a winner could be chosen at the end of the match. The one that kills gets 10 points, and the one that dies loses 5 points. The short video below shows a glimpse of the Maze War gameplay.
