Number 2: ARPANET network
ARPANET stands for the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. It was first developed for the U.S. Department of Defense. It was created by the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency). The network was created in response to the Soviet Union's Sputnik in 1957. It was created by computer scientists so hosts could communicate their protocols much more easily. Soon, there were more users on the network than the amount of people it took to develop it in the first place.
The ARPANET was never thought of as a way to network online video games. Due to the open-source and ability to create such things, games were born.
The ARPANET created the most influential online game in history. Maze War was the very first 3-dimensional online multiplayer first person shooter game. That is a mouthful, but it has to be said. Maze War took what Empire started a year earlier and took it to a way higher level. Who thought a bunch of eyeballs floating around in a maze could spark such a revolution? Well, it did.
